Tips for keeping your feet happy (and healthy)

From running errands to running for exercise, most humans put their feet through a lot. In New York, a place where we are constantly on the go, it can be difficult to remember to take care of them. Still, it’s important that we make the  time to do just that. Here are a few easy tips for keeping your feet happy and healthy. If you have any questions about them or want additional advice, don’t hesitate to reach out. We’re here to help!

Wear the rights shoes

Selecting shoes that accommodate your feet natural shape is essential for foot health and well-being. Unfortunately, it’s often easier to choose the fashionable find over the medically approved one. When you are shopping for footwear, lookout for a pair that is neither too tight nor too loose. Either of these issues can cause your toes and heels to overcompensate and subsequently feel stressed. Although this might not make a difference overnight, with time, improperly fitting shoes can cause issues ranging from torn ligaments and sprained ankles to bunions and hammertoes. Additionally, keep your arches in mind. Your arch type should dictate the types of shoes you choose to wear.

Don’t put off treatments

If you notice an unusual pain or strain in your feet, don’t assume that it’s nothing or that it will heal on its own. Aching feet are nature’s way of telling you that something is wrong, whether it’s the amount of time that you’re spending standing or an early indicator of something more severe. Despite the popularity of the saying “no pain, no gain,” pushing through these problems won’t make you any stronger. In fact, delaying an evaluation can lead to more complex issues down the line. Speak with a trusted medical advisor as soon as you can to rule out injury and discuss your treatment options.

Stretch them out

It’s important that you give your feet time and space to breathe. This is particularly essential following bouts of exercise and if you are an athlete. Stretching your foot muscles allows them to be more flexible and have better movement in your daily routine. There are some great resources for foot exercises online, or you can work with a trainer to develop some strategies. In our office, we are always open to discussing strategies for keeping your feet loose and limber.

Have a spa day

From time to time, take a break and book a spa day to treat your feet to a massage and some pampering. Since foot health and touch are connected to other parts of your body, this can be a rejuvenating process for your whole self. Before booking your appointment, do some research. Look for establishments that have high ratings online and don’t be afraid to ask about their standards for cleanliness to help avoid fungal infections.
